HITMAN World of Assassination Review

There's an interesting trap that games in the Stealth Sandbox space tend to fall into. HITMAN World of Assassination mostly avoids it, but the way it avoids it is more interesting than the genre itself.

IO Interactive's HITMAN World of Assassination arrived with modest expectations. Six weeks and 47 hours later, I think most of them were warranted — with caveats worth understanding before you spend $60.

Gameplay

Mechanically, HITMAN World of Assassination sits at an interesting intersection. The run-into-meta-progression loop pulls from city-builder design heritage, but the way IO Interactive layers dialogue branching on top changes how you approach each session. After a few hours you start to recognize patterns — not just in the game, but in your own decisions.

Combat in HITMAN World of Assassination rewards reading more than reflexes. IO Interactive clearly built around the idea that you should always have time to think — but the consequences for thinking wrong are real. The result is the rare action game that respects deliberate play.

Story & Setting

The story is told mostly through environment and incidental dialogue, which is the right choice for the kind of game this is. There are no twenty-minute cutscenes. There are no NPCs who follow you around explaining lore. What there is, instead, is a world that responds to attention.

Generosity isn't always the right word for game design, but it fits here.

Visuals & Performance

Art direction by IO Interactive leans heavily on soft-focus mood lighting. It's a strong choice that gives the game a consistent look across its 85 hours, even if some environments late in the game feel under-budgeted compared to the opening.

Verdict

Buy it now if you played Disco Elysium and wanted more like it. Wait for a sale if you're new to the Stealth Sandbox space — the learning curve is real and the discount usually arrives within six months.

HITMAN World of Assassination is the kind of game that rewards patience. The first three hours don't sell it. The thirtieth hour does. If you have the time, give it. If you don't, the verdict is honest: it's not a 'short session' game.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to finish HITMAN World of Assassination?

Main story runs around 50-60 hours depending on how thoroughly you explore. Completionists can spend 2-3× that.

Is HITMAN World of Assassination good for newcomers to Stealth Sandbox?

It depends. The systems are deep but the tutorial does a fair job. Veterans of Stealth Sandbox will feel at home faster.

Which platform should I play HITMAN World of Assassination on?

Console version is the most stable on launch. PC version benefits from the modding scene long-term.

Was HITMAN World of Assassination worth the launch-day price?

Released in 2023, and as of writing it holds up. Wait for a sale if you're price-sensitive — major discounts arrive within 6 months.

Are there DLCs or expansions worth picking up?

Skip the cosmetic DLC. The story expansion is the only one we'd recommend at full price.

What did IO Interactive get right (and what could be better)?

The systems are confident and the combat is satisfying. The story handoffs and load times are the rough spots.

The pacing in the second act is exactly the issue that gets glossed over in most reviews.
