Final Fantasy XVI Review

Going into Final Fantasy XVI, I expected a linear narrative trip. What I got was the rare studio that kept its promises. That gap is what this review will spend the next thousand words pulling apart.

Gameplay

Combat in Final Fantasy XVI rewards reading more than reflexes. Square Enix clearly built around the idea that you should always have time to think — but the consequences for thinking wrong are real. The result is the rare action game that respects deliberate play.

The core loop is intentionally over-long. You scout the next area, then you evaluate the cost, then you either commit or hit reset. What separates Final Fantasy XVI from peers in the Action RPG space is the way the second decision changes the first one. It's a subtle thing, but you feel it more the longer you play.

Story & Setting

The story is told mostly through environment and incidental dialogue, which is the right choice for the kind of game this is. There are no twenty-minute cutscenes. There are no NPCs who follow you around explaining lore. What there is, instead, is a world that responds to attention.

Where Final Fantasy XVI stumbles narratively is in the middle. The opening is sharp, the ending is satisfying, and the long middle stretch — somewhere between hours 13 and 34 — has pacing problems that Square Enix hasn't fully solved. Patches have helped. They haven't fixed.

Visuals & Performance

If there's a visual complaint, it's that some interface elements need a second pass. Inventory screens, especially, feel like they were finalized later than the rest of the art direction. A patch could close that gap entirely.

Verdict

We score Final Fantasy XVI a 9/10. That's high for the genre, but the strengths are unambiguous and the weaknesses are addressable through patches. Worth the time of anyone with even a passing interest.

Final Fantasy XVI is the kind of game that rewards patience. The first three hours don't sell it. The thirtieth hour does. If you have the time, give it. If you don't, the verdict is honest: it's not a 'short session' game.

The economy is broken in the late game, surprised this wasn't mentioned.
